SSRS Hosting :: Cutting IT Costs with SQL Server 2008

clock April 30, 2010 17:34 by author Richard

This topic talk about how the SQL Server 2008 help your company in cost saving. But we are describing only a short description about SQL Server 2008. So, if you seek more information about SQL Server 2008, you can choose ASPHostCentral as alternatives. You’ll get the best service at an affordable price. Only with @ 4.99/month, you can directly get the services you want. So, what are you waiting for? Try it!!

Information management, access, and delivery platforms such as Microsoft's SQL Server 2008 lie at the heart of many organizations' IT infrastructures, and these platforms are available from a number of vendors. But one of the ways in which Microsoft SQL Server 2008 stands out from other vendors' offerings is the sheer number of features the platform includes that enable your organization to cut its IT related costs significantly.

Here are eight ways that SQL Server 2008 can help your organization save money:

1. Reduce your hardware, power and licensing costs though virtualization
Using Microsoft's Hyper-V hypervisor it's easy to virtualize SQL Server 2008 servers and run multiple SQL Server 2008 virtual machines on a single physical machine. That means less physical hardware needs to be purchased and maintained, you spend less on power and cooling, and you free up valuable data center space. You can also make significant savings on licensing costs too. That's because you need only one Windows license and one SQL Server 2008 license per physical processor running in each host server, regardless of the number of virtual machines that run in them.

2. Cut data and backup storage costs with compression
SQL Server 2008 can save you money on disk hardware, reducing your storage requirements by as much as two-thirds using data compression to compress tables, hardware indexes, and partitions. It can also reduce backup storage requirements (and costs) significantly using backup compression to store backups more efficiently — while actually speeding them up by reducing the number of writes needed to complete them.

3. Slash your administration overheads using automation
Freeing IT staff from routine database maintenance tasks by using automation saves money and enables IT staffers to be redeployed to more productive tasks. The SQL Server Agent service can be set up to execute many scheduled administrative tasks such as index management and back up automatically, notifying you in the event of a problem. Alternatively, you can automate your own complex tasks by using Microsoft's PowerShell command-line shell to write custom management scripts. You can also use SQL Server 2008's Policy-Based Management to implement and maintain policy compliance for all your databases and servers — or bring them into compliance — with a minimum of manual intervention.

4. Reduce purchasing requirements by optimizing hardware with the Resource Governor
Contention between applications for server CPU and memory resources can lead to application performance that is sluggish, or that varies widely at peak usage times — especially on older hardware. The Resource Governor, new to SQL Server 2008, helps solve this problem by enabling you to give priority to your business-critical applications and to limit the resources that other workload groups can be allocated. This helps eliminate runaway queries and ensures that your business-critical applications always offer acceptable performance levels without the need to spend money upgrading your severs.

5. Save money by consolidating your systems
Using SQL Server 2008's multi-database support you can consolidate databases with similar security and compatibility requirements into a single SQL Server 2008 instance, using the Resource Governor to ensure that all your databases run according to your performance requirements. If you have databases with different security or compatibility requirements you can also cut costs using SQL Server 2008's multi-instance support to consolidate up to 50 instances of SQL Server onto a single physical server. In addition to reducing hardware costs you can make significant license cost savings this way because only one SQL Server license is needed for each processor, regardless of how many SQL Server 2008 instances are installed.

6. Reduce lost revenue from downtime thanks to high availability
System downtime means lost revenue for many organizations, and in many cases every second counts. SQL Server 2008 has been developed using a number of technologies that aim to minimize both planned and unplanned stoppages, including rock solid 16-node clustering, database mirroring, peer-to-peer replication, online backup and restore, and support for hot-swapping failing hardware.

7. Enterprise class Business Intelligence (BI) at no extra cost
Good decision making requires access to the right information, and good BI systems rarely come cheap. But SQL Server 2008 Enterprise Edition saves you unnecessary expenditure because it includes a full BI and integration platform to go with the enterprise-class database system at no extra cost. Using SQL Server 2008 Integration Services, Analysis Services, and the database engine it's even possible to build a complete data warehouse solution using the SQL Server 2008 platform.

8. Save on your security infrastructure using the secure SQL Server platform
Protecting your systems and data can be extremely expensive, and the cost of losing your data or having it compromised by malicious intruders can be even higher. SQL Server 2008 has been designed from the ground up to be secure, offering a minimum attack surface to hackers. It also includes built-in support for transparent data encryption (without expensive custom client application development) to help keep your data safe and minimizing the risk of revenue loss or liability costs from compromised data.

SQL Server goes beyond relational data structures, supporting XML, spatial, and unstructured data. That means that if you need to support these kinds of data structures as your organization develops you can do so without any additional outlay. It's an example of how, while SQL Server 2008 can help your business reduce its IT costs immediately, it's also been designed to continue saving you money well into the future as well.

SSRS Hosting :: How to Set Up Microsoft SQL Server Express

clock April 28, 2010 14:48 by author Richard

This topic explains article about SSRS. If you want better understanding of SSRS, we suggest to try ASPHostCentral.com and you can start from our lowest Standard Plan @4.99/month to host your SSRS site.

Microsoft SQL Server Express is a free edition of Microsoft SQL Server. Some features are disabled in the Express edition; however, you can still develop extremely powerful and fully functional databases to use with your websites and applications. You can download SQL Server Express from Microsoft's website or as an add-on with one of Microsoft's other Express edition software packages. Setting up a SQL Server Express instance requires installing prerequisites, such as Windows Update, and chosen components, such as sample databases and the database engine.

Instructions

1. Connect to the Internet and install all needed Windows Updates. Go to "Start--All Programs--Windows Update." Choose "Express" and download and install all available updates. Ensure you have .NET Framework 2.0 installed. If you don't have it, Windows Update will install it for you. Restart your computer if prompted.

2. Download SQL Server Express. Either burn the file to a disk or run the setup file from your hard drive. Click the "sqlexpr.exe" file to start the installation wizard.

3. Agree to the license agreement and allow the SQL Server Component Update to run. If any other prerequisites are required, they will be installed now. Click "Next" once updates are installed.

4. Press "Continue" after the pre-installation check scan runs. Enter a "Name" and "Company" into the appropriate text boxes and press "Next." Select which features to install by checking the boxes next to each feature. You can also install sub-features by clicking the plus sign next to a feature to expand sub-features.

5. Choose whether to install a default or named instance. A named instance is normally only used if you want to install multiple instances of SQL Server or if any SQL Server instances already exist. Click "Next."

6. Choose a local or domain user account to associate with the SQL Server Express instance. If you have clicked "Hide advanced configuration options," you may not see this page or other configuration pages.

7. Choose your authentication mode and a password if necessary. Click "Next." Continue configuring each component you chose to install. The wizard will take you through a quick configuration screen for each component.

8. Press "Install" after reviewing your setup choices. Press "Finish" after installation is complete.

SSRS Hosting :: Report Viewer

clock April 26, 2010 15:28 by author Richard

This topic explains article about SSRS. If you want better understanding of SSRS, we suggest to try ASPHostCentral and you can start from our lowest Standard Plan @4.99/month to host your SSRS site.

If you have written any reporting applications in .NET, you may be familiar with Crystal Reports and/or Microsoft SQL Server Reporting Services.

The ReportViewer control is a new addition to Visual Studio 2005, which is actually a Reporting Services component. This control has two versions - Windows Forms version and Web version. As you may presume, Windows Forms version is used to write reporting applications in Windows Forms applications and Web version is used to write ASP.NET Web applications.

Report Processing Modes

The ReportViewer control supports two report processing modes - local and remote.

In local processing mode, the ReportViewer control runs within the client application and the report processing is performed as a local process on the client machine where actual application is running.

In remote processing mode, the ReportViewer control runs on a SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services report server. In this mode, the ReportViewer control is used to view the report that is already generated on the server. All processing from data retrieval to report rendering is performed on the report server. To use remote processing mode, you must have a licensed copy of SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services.

Both Windows and Web controls can be configured to run in local processing mode or remote processing mode.

Namespace and Assembly

The ReportViewer control assemblies for Windows Forms and Web Forms versions are  Microsoft.ReportViewer.WinForms and Microsoft.ReportViewer.WebForms respectively. You must have to import the namespace in your application before start using the ReportViewer control. If you use add the ReportViewer control by dragging and dropping from the Toolbox, the namespace and assembly references are added for you automatically.

Create a Simple Report

Now let's create a simple report using the ReportViewer control. In this application, we will load data from a SQL Server database to generate reports.

1. Create a Web Application using Visual Studio 2005

2. Drag and drop a ReportViewer control from Toolbox to the Web page

3. Right click on the Project in Solution Explorer and select Add New Item menu item and select DataSet from the list and keep DataSet1.xsd as name.

4. The next screen is TableAdapter wizard, which asks you question about your database connection and SQL queries where you want data to be selected from. Just follow the wizard steps one by one and you will end up seeing DataSet in designer mode with your table name and columns. Close the designer.

5. Now right click on the Project again and select Add New Item and select Report from the available items and click Add button.

6. It will add Report.rdlc file to your project and will open the report designer. As you can see in the left side, you will see your DataSet.

7. Now you can expand your DataSet and drag whatever column you want in the report to the report designer.

8. Now if you right click and select Properties on a TextBox, you can apply settings like visibility, navigation, format, font, and sorting. For now, you can say OK on this dialog.

9. Now go to the Web page and click the smart tag on ReportViewer and select Report.rdlc from the list.

10. That's it. Now if you run the application, you will see report. You can navigate through records, and export it to Excel or PDF using the Export option.

Summary

The ReportViewer control available in Visual Studio 2005 makes reporting easier for .NET developers. This article was a basic introduction to ReportViewer control and how to get started with it. Now having Reporting Services component available in Visual Studio, you don't have to deal with Crystal Report, its distribution and licensing issues.

SSRS Hosting :: How to Set Up a Microsoft SQL Server

clock April 22, 2010 22:27 by author Richard

This topic explains the steps in starting Microsoft SQL Server. If you want better understanding of SSRS, we suggest to try ASPHostCentral.com and you can start from our lowest Standard Plan @4.99/month to host your SSRS site. We guarantee you will not disappointed.

Microsoft SQL Server allows you to create powerful database applications. SQL databases can serve as your front and back end for websites and programs. Setting up a Microsoft SQL Server involves installing several different components, including the database engine, reporting services, connectivity tools and sample databases. You can install SQL Server from a command prompt, but the easiest and most recommended method is by using the Microsoft SQL Server disk or disks. The SQL Server disk will also install the required Windows Updates you need to use the program.

Instructions

Step 1:
Insert the Microsoft SQL Server disk in your CD/DVD drive. If the setup wizard doesn't begin automatically, explore the files on the disk and double-click the "setup.exe" file in the root folder.

Step 2:
Install any prerequisites. The SQL Server installation may try to begin at the same time. Exit the SQL Server installation and install prerequisites first. Agree to the license agreement for any prerequisites such as the .NET Framework. Follow the installation wizard to complete prerequisite installations. Click "Finish" when complete. Restart your computer if prompted.
If all prerequisites are already installed, this step will be skipped.

Step 3:
Click "New Installation or Add Features to an Existing Installation" to begin the SQL Server installation. Press "OK" to set up log files. Choose whether your version of SQL Server is a free version or has a product key. If a product key is needed, enter your product key and press "Next."

Step 4:
Agree to the terms of service. Choose which components you wish to install. Place a check mark in the box of each component you want installed. Choose where you want to install SQL Server. Most users choose the default folder.

Step 5:
Choose whether you want to install a default or named instance. A named instance is typically used only if you will be installing multiple SQL Server instances. If any instance of SQL Server already exists, you must choose a named instance.

Step 6:
Select a log-on for the SQL services. One log-on can control all services, or each service can have a unique log-on. Continue following the SQL Server wizard to configure your selected services. Each component you chose to install will have a configuration wizard page.

Step 7:
Choose whether to enable error reporting. This sends nonidentifying information to Microsoft when SQL Server errors occur. This is turned on by default. Press "Install" after reviewing your configuration settings. Press "Close" once the installation is complete.
